Hazrat Khwaja Baqi Billah (RA) stands as one of India's youngest saints, whose spiritual eminence was evident from his early youth. He departed from this world at a young age, yet he was a profound scholar and a great spiritual leader of his time. His spiritual greatness is difficult to fully comprehend. It was through him that a deep spiritual connection was established between the Muslims of the subcontinent and those in Afghanistan and the tribal regions, a bond that remains unbroken to this day. His successors and disciples spread across India, Afghanistan, and Iran.
Birth of Khwaja Baqi Billah
Hazrat Khwaja Baqi Billah's esteemed father was Qazi Abdus Salam, who belonged to a highly influential and respected family among the free tribes of Afghanistan. For a long time, he had resided in Kabul. As Qazi Abdus Salam was a great scholar and virtuous man of his era, he held extraordinary religious prestige in Kabul.
Hazrat Khwaja Baqi Billah was born in Kabul in 971 Hijri, during the reign of Emperor Akbar. The blessings of his birth enhanced his father, Qazi Abdus Salam's, influence to such an extent that even the necks of the sultans of the time bowed before him. From childhood, signs of his sainthood were apparent. At the age of three, he would often sit alone for hours, as if engrossed in divine worship.
Early Education of Khwaja Baqi Billah
At the age of five, Hazrat Khwaja's elementary education began under the supervision of his father. After several years, he was entrusted to Hazrat Maulana Sadiq. Maulana Sadiq was a unique scholar not only in Kabul but throughout Afghanistan. He possessed both worldly knowledge and spiritual perfections. Hazrat Khwaja Baqi Billah benefited immensely from him.Hazrat Khwaja had not been with Maulana Sadiq for long when Maulana Sadiq needed to travel to Mawara'an-Nahr. Hazrat Khwaja was unwilling to leave his perfect teacher and accompanied him from Kabul to Mawara'an-Nahr. Upon reaching Mawara'an-Nahr, Hazrat Khwaja completed his worldly sciences under Maulana Sadiq. Despite his young age, Hazrat Khwaja Baqi Billah was counted among the esteemed scholars, and gradually his fame spread beyond the borders of Mawara'an-Nahr.
Khwaja Baqi Billah's Search for a Perfect Guide
After mastering worldly knowledge, he developed a passion for spiritual sciences. From childhood, his heart held an immense love and longing for spiritual attainment. He began searching for saints in Mawara'an-Nahr and its surroundings. He sought blessings and knowledge from every elder he encountered, always in search of his perfect spiritual guide.After receiving spiritual blessings from the elders of Mawara'an-Nahr, he turned his attention towards India. At that time, India was renowned for its spiritual leaders. When he arrived in India, his contemporaries and others tried their utmost to persuade him to accept a high royal position and immerse himself in worldly affairs. However, he had no interest in worldly pleasures; he was born for spiritual sovereignty. After coming to India, he spent years searching for spiritual guides.
He states that once, while engrossed in the study of Sufism, a sudden divine manifestation occurred that left him overwhelmed, losing his senses. Finally, the spiritual pull of Hazrat Khwaja Bahauddin Zakariya Multani guided him, and after that, he became even more active in the search for enlightened souls.
One day, he saw in meditation that Hazrat Khwaja Amkangi (RA) stood before him, saying, "O son, we are waiting for you; come to us quickly." Consequently, he traveled to Turkestan and Mawara'an-Nahr, where he took allegiance and received spiritual training from Khwaja Darwesh Muhammad (RA) and then from his eminent successor, Hazrat Khwaja Muhammad Amkangi (RA).
Although he received the cloak of succession from Hazrat Khwaja Amkangi, he gained spiritual blessings from various elders, including Sheikh Samarqandi (RA), Khwaja Ahmad Baswi, Hazrat Amir Abdullah Balkhi, Hazrat Khwaja Ubaidullah (RA), and Hazrat Maulana Lutfullah (RA), among others.
Khwaja Baqi Billah's Arrival in India
After receiving succession from his guide, he expressed his desire to stay in his guide's service. However, his guide commanded him to go to India and spread the light of guidance there.Thus, he came to Delhi, India, and settled there.
Residency in Delhi
Initially, he stayed in Lahore, but later, upon receiving a command, he moved towards Delhi. While traveling to Delhi, if he saw an old or weak person, he would dismount his ride and let them sit. In this way, he reached Delhi, helping the poor and needy. He lived a short life in Delhi (only about four years), but thousands of people benefited from his khanqah (spiritual center).His greatest service was granting the succession of the Naqshbandi order to Hazrat Mujaddid Alf Sani (Sheikh Ahmad Sirhindi). Mujaddid Alf Sani then spread this order throughout the Indian subcontinent.
Hazrat Khwaja Baqi Billah's Compassion
Hazrat Khwaja Baqi Billah was immensely compassionate and kind. His compassion was not limited to humans but extended greatly to animals as well. Once, he was engaged in Tahajjud (pre-dawn) prayers. When he rose for the prayer, a cat came and slept on his quilt. After finishing his prayers, when he came to his bed, he saw the cat sleeping on the quilt. His compassion did not allow him to wake the cat, so he sat in the cold until morning while the cat continued to sleep.A royal Amir, who was a great devotee of Hazrat Khwaja Baqi Billah, sent a large sum of money to him and requested that it be distributed among the deserving. He instructed his servant to add whatever cash they had to it and distribute all the money among the poor and needy. This incident shows how generous-hearted Hazrat Khwaja was.
Such was his humility that if even an ordinary person spoke harsh words to him, he would smile and remain silent.
Demise of Hazrat Khwaja Baqi Billah
He began prophesying his death several months in advance. After that, he remained ill for a considerable time and finally, on Saturday, 25th Jumada al-Thani 1012(AH), he departed from this mortal world between Asr and Maghrib prayers, uttering "Allah, Allah."Mausoleum of Hazrat Khwaja Baqi Billah (Mazar)
After his passing, a pure place was prepared for his grave. However, while carrying the body, people experienced a certain state, leading them to another location where they placed the body. Upon reaching there, the disciples remembered that Khwaja had performed ablution and prayed at that very spot, and when he rose, some earth had clung to his clothes, and he had said, "This will be our burial place." Remembering this incident, his disciples dug his grave there and laid him to rest. Indeed, he lit many lamps and guided thousands of people, but four were particularly prominent. Their names are: Sheikh Ahmad Sirhindi Mujaddid Alf Sani, Sheikh Tajuddin Sambhali, Khwaja Husamuddin, and Sheikh Allah Dawood.Among these four, Hazrat Mujaddid Alf Sani attained the highest rank, being not only his successor but also a true lover.
In addition to his spiritual progeny, he had two sons. The elder son's name was Khwaja Ubaidullah, and the other's was Muhammad Abdullah. Sahibzada Muhammad Abdullah stayed with Hazrat Mujaddid Alf Sani for a long time, benefiting from his spiritual perfections and attaining a special status.

Hazrat Khwaja Baqi Billah Naqshbandi (RA) was a spiritual luminary of the Indian subcontinent and the founder of the Naqshbandi Sufi order in the region. He dedicated his life to spreading the teachings of Tasawwuf (Sufism) and guiding seekers on the path of spirituality. He passed away on 25th Jumada al-Thani 1012 AH (1603 CE) in Delhi, and every year his Urs is observed with great devotion and reverence. This spiritual gathering is considered a means of receiving divine blessings, where devotees engage in Dhikr, recitation of the Quran, and sending salutations upon the Prophet ﷺ. The Khanqah of Hazrat Khwaja Baqi Billah (RA) remains a center of guidance and inspiration for those seeking truth and spiritual enlightenment.
