Hazrat Khawaja Moinuddin Chishti (Known as Khawaja Gharib Nawaz) is a very famous and Renowned Indian Sufi Saint .His shrine in Ajmer, India, is a famous place among Hindus, Muslims, and people of other religions. Each year, thousands of people visit his shrine to seek God's blessings.
Khwaja Gharib Nawaz was born on 15 April 1143 A.D in village Sangar of City Sistan , County Iran and passed away on March 15, 1236 A.D.
Family Background of Khawaja Gareeb Nawaz:
Khawaja Moinuddin Chishti’s family hailed from a city called Chisht, located near Herat (in present-day Afghanistan), This is the reason He is called chishti. His father's name was Ghayasuddin Hasan, and His mother's name was Syeda Bibi Ummalwara (also known as Bibi Mah-e-Noor). His father was a descendant of Hazrat Hassan (A.S.). He was not only a renowned scholar of Islam in his time but also a man of great piety and humility.
The early education of Khawaja Gareeb Nawaz was carried out under the guidance and supervision of his parents in the city of Khorasan. However, his parents passed away when he was just 11 years old, while in Iraq, where their graves are located. Hazrat Moinuddin also had three brothers.
Khawaja Moinuddin Hasan Chishti Name Meaning:
The Name Khawaja Moinuddin Hasan Chishti Has mainly three parts.
Prefix Khawaja means King, Ruler
Middle name Moinuddin Hasan is real name
An Arabic name meaning "Helper of the Religion" (Moin = Helper, al-Din = Religion
The suffix Chishti is name which refers to the Chishti Sufi Order.
In Sufism The word khawaja is given to a Saint which has power of 40 or 7 Saints. Which means He had powers of multiple Saints.
Early Life and Education of Moinuddin Chishti:
Moinuddin chishti Got his basic education at his home from His Parents.
At the age of about 15 , He Lost His Parents. He Got a Garden and Grinding Stone from His parents in Inheritance.
One day he was in his Garden working hard , A Saint (Hazrat Abrahim Qandozi ) passed by his Garden and entered in it, he welcomed him and asked him to sit down and gave him something to eat.
In return that Saint gave him a piece of bread, which he ate happily, After eating that piece of Bread his inner condition Changed from worldly affairs to Spiritual Growth and Love of God. He deeply felt the need of Spiritual knowledge.
After this incident He sold his garden and household and went to Uzbekistan Country, City Samarkand in search of religious knowledge .
After getting education of Quran from Samarkand, he moved to Bukhara and met Hazrat Hassamudin Who taught him Religious Subjects.
Then he traveled to Iraq and met Hazrat Najmudun Kubra, and continued his Search of knowledge. In Iraq he also visited The Shrine Of Hazrat Mola Ali alehi Salam and Karbala (Sacred Place in Islam).
Meeting His Spiritual Guide Usman Harooni
In Islam there are two type of knowledge , Knowledge of heart and knowledge of tongue (also religious).After getting the Religious Knowledge Khwaja Gareeb Nawaz (Moinuddin) went to Bagdad and Then City of Iran named Haroon in search of Spiritual teacher (Murshid) to get knowledge of Heart (Spirituality) which connects Human with God.
There He met a Saint of God Hazrat Usman Harroni . He accepted him as his spiritual mentor and started getting spiritual knowledge from him.
The Meaning of title Khwaja:
It is Quoted that once Hazrat Usman Harrooni Spritual Master of Khawaja Gharib Nawaz changed its wearing from Islam to Hinduism and said to it's all followers including Khawaja Moinuddin chishti that I have changed my religion to Hinduism and now I am Hindu.After saying that he went into Temple and started practicing hinduism. He stayed there for three years.
When He came out of temple after 3 years , He saw Moinuddin Chisti was sitting at door waiting for him. He asked Mueenudin why didn't you leave as I am no more Muslim, Moinuddin answered all deciphles have left You except me because I know The person who connected me with God, can't be wrong. There must be some Secret wisdom in your act of changing religion to Hinduism. Thats why I waited for you.
This act inspired His Murshid (Spritual Master) .After this, His mentor Usman Harooni held Him close to his chest and poured all the blessings into his chest. He gave him spiritual powers of 40 or 7 saints that's why he is called khawaja.
Khawaja Gareeb Nawaz Visit to India:
According to many traditions, Hazrat Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti was ordered by the Holy Prophet to go to Subcontinent (now india , pakistan, bangladesh) and spread the teachings of religion and spirituality there.
Holy prophet Mohammad (peace be Upon him) appeared in His dream and said we have made you
So He continued his journey towards the subcontinent and reached Delhi through various routes with company of 40 deciples.
On the way, you also visited the shrine of Hazrat Data Ali Hajveri in Lahore And wrote a poem in their honor.

Due to opposition from the kings in Delhi, He extended his journey to Ajmer (a place in rajhistan india) and camped there.
Miracles of Khawaja Gareeb Nawaz:
After going to Ajmer, you camped there at the foot of a mountain near the lake. The place in Ajmer where you are said to have camped was the place where the camels of the king of that place used to sit.When evening came, some of the king's servants came there with camels and said,
"Get up, this is the place where the king's camels are tied up."
When khawaja heard that , he ordered his deciples to leave and while leaving he said we are leaving but your camel would not be able to stand up.
On next morning those servents tried to lift up camels, but they couldn't and And the camel remained seated. After many tries They came to Khawaja and apologized, after that they were able to make Camels stand up.
Hearing about your miracles in Ajmer, many people became fascinated by you and people started coming to you in droves, including a large number of Hindus.
He used to perform ablution at Anna Sagar, a lake in Ajmer. Around this lake there were many Hindu temples. The priests there forbade you from performing ablution in this lake. But you ordered one of your slaves to bring a bucket of water from that lake. As soon as he brought the bucket, the lake dried up. Later, when these people apologized, He poured water of bucket back in to lake, and the lake was full of water again.
The king Raja Prithvi was afraid of the Khwaja Gareeb Nawaz:
At that time, Raja Prithvi was ruling Ajmer. His mother had already told him that a Saint would come and destroy his kingdom.
He the king sent a black magician to counter khawaja, When the magician came before Khawaja Muinudin Chishti, You looked at him, which made him forget all his spells. During this time, Khwaja Muinuddin Chishti offered a prayer and the magician kept looking at him . After offering prayer He again looked at magician, which made him fall, the magician tried to say "Ram Ram" (the Hindu sacred word) , but The Word "Raheem Raheem"(a muslim sacred word) slipped from his mouth.After this incidence, that magician become follower of Hazrat khawaja Mueen u din Chishti.
When your fame had grown to a great extent, You sent some of your servants to convey the message of Islam to the king. When they told the teaching of Islam to king , the king got angry and tortured those deciples of Khawaja.
When Khawaja Moinuddin knew that , You spoke in glory "We have seized Pithaura (Prithviraj) and handed him to the army of Islam".
After only few years The Muslim king Muhammad Ghori (also known as Mu'izz al-Din Muhammad Ghori), who was already defeated by Prithvi raj (Ruler of Ajmer) , He attacked Prithvi's government again and defeated and killed him.
Hence again The people of Ajmer witnessed the Miracle of Khawaja .
Teachings of Khawaja Gareeb Nawaz:
When dehli(India) was conquered by Muslims. Khawaja Muinuddin appointed His deciples in different cities of india. Qutubuddin Bakhtiar Kaki in Delhi And Naguri(a place) was handed over to Hazrat Hamiduddin Naguri.
When your court (darbar or Spiritual Site) was established, you appointed Khawaja Fakhruddin Gurdezi as his representative, who would handle the langar(The Community Kitchen where every one can eat freely) and other responsibilities there.
After this, the teachings of Islam and Sufism became widespread throughout India, and the hearts of the people became filled with the love of Allah and His Messenger. He Teached Love of God to every soul whether he was hindu, Muslim , or Christian.
