When Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti, the great saint of Ajmer, visited Lahore and stayed near the shrine of Hazrat Ali Hujwiri, he composed the following famous couplet:
“Ganj Bakhsh-e-Faiz-e-Alam, Mazhar-e-Nur-e-Khuda
Naqisaan-ra Pir-e-Kamil, Kaamilaan-ra Rahnuma.”
Translation:
“He is the Bestower of Spiritual Treasures for the entire world,
A manifestation of the Light of God,
A perfect guide for the imperfect,
And a leader for those who are already perfected.”
From that day, Hazrat Ali Hujwiri became known as Data Ganj Bakhsh.

“You have been appointed as the spiritual custodian of Lahore. Go there immediately.”
Initially, Hazrat Ali Hujwiri hesitated because Sheikh Hasan Zanjani was already residing in Lahore. But His Murshid said Follow what has been said to you. Upon arrival to Lahore,He saw a funeral , upon asking he discovered that Sheikh Hasan Zanjani had passed away the previous night. He led the funeral prayer and understood the divine wisdom behind his master’s command.
He then permanently settled in Lahore, making it a hub of spiritual education, guidance, and Sufism.
Passing Away
Hazrat Ali Hujwiri رحمتہ اللہ علیہ passed away in 465 AH (1072 CE), though some historians suggest 456 AH. His shrine, located in Lahore, Pakistan, is among the most visited shrines in the world.

One of the most famous miracles associated with him occurred during the construction of a mosque in Lahore. The scholars objected that the mosque was not facing the Qibla correctly. Hazrat Ali Hujwiri remained silent until the mosque was completed. Then, during the first congregational prayer, he asked the people to observe — miraculously, the Kaaba itself appeared in front of them, proving that the mosque was perfectly aligned.
This incident confirmed his spiritual authority and divine connection.
